Sechaba Labs

Don't teach children to use the future. Teach them to build it.

A practical environment for learning, research and building.

The idea

Most technology education teaches operation. How to use the tool, pass the assessment, and produce the expected result.

Labs is organised around building things that did not exist before, which is a different activity and needs a different environment. Learners define problems worth solving rather than working through exercises somebody else set.

What gets built here

Domains, not subjects. They overlap on purpose, because real problems do.

  1. 01

    Computational thinking

Decomposition, abstraction, and the habit of breaking a hard thing into tractable pieces.

  2. 02

    Software engineering

Writing code that other people can read, change and trust.

  3. 03

    AI and machine learning

How these systems actually work, what they are bad at, and where they should not be used.

  4. 04

    Robotics and electronics

Physical computing, where a mistake is visible and immediate.

  5. 05

    Cybersecurity

Thinking adversarially about systems, including your own.

  6. 06

    Data and research

Asking a question that data can answer, and knowing when it cannot.

  7. 07

    Product and design

Who this is for, what they are trying to accomplish, and what to build last.

  8. 08

    Entrepreneurship

Turning something that works into something that sustains itself.

  9. 09

    Open source

Building in public, reading other people's work, contributing to it.

How the work is done

The same loop every time, whatever the domain.

  1. 01

    Think

What is the problem, and is it worth solving?

  2. 02

    Research

What is already known, and who has tried this before?

  3. 03

    Design

What should exist, and what should deliberately not?

  4. 04

    Build

With what is actually available, well.

  5. 05

    Test

Find out whether it works, honestly.

  6. 06

    Improve

Change it based on what you found, not what you hoped.

  7. 07

    Share

Explain it to someone who was not there.

  8. 08

    Mentor

Teach someone else to do it. This is where the learning is confirmed.

Where a person goes

Progression here is identity, not certification. It ends in teaching, because that is where you find out what you actually understand.

  1. 01

    Child

    Curious, and taken seriously.

  2. 02

    Learner

Working through real problems with support.

  3. 03

    Builder

Shipping things that exist and are used.

  4. 04

    Mentor

    Bringing the next person through.

  5. 05

    Leader

Deciding what the work should be.

Building with what is here

Constraints are the material, not the excuse. A lab that only works with ideal equipment, reliable power and fast connectivity is a lab that does not work here.

So the methodology is deliberately pragmatic: combine what is available, use the room you are in, and get something working before you get it perfect. That is a research tradition, not a compromise.

Honestly, where this stands

Sechaba Labs is being built. This page describes what it is for and how it will work, and we would rather publish that as intention than describe facilities and cohorts that do not yet exist.

When there are learners, there will be their work on this site — with their consent, and on their terms.
