Sechaba

A stronger nation is built by people who can think, learn, create and solve.

Sechaba means nation, community, people. It is also the name of the man this initiative is named for.

What this is

The Sechaba Initiative develops young South Africans into thinkers, problem-solvers, researchers, technologists, engineers, developers, innovators, entrepreneurs and leaders.

The ambition is capability, not literacy. Literacy is being able to use what other people built. Capability is being able to build it.

We do not just want to build technology in South Africa. We want to help build the people who will build what comes next.

Why it carries his name

[TO BE WRITTEN BY NKHATHO — see sechaba-strategy.md §9. This passage is his to write and nobody else can write it.]

What we hold to

Three commitments that decide how everything else is designed.

  1. 01

    Capability, not catching up

Young South Africans are never framed as behind. The standard is world-class as a baseline, stated flatly and without apology.

  2. 02

What you already know is an asset

A learner's existing knowledge is where the work starts, not a gap to be corrected. Nobody arrives here as a deficit.

  3. 03

    It has to outlast us

Learners become mentors. An environment that depends permanently on the people who started it has not been built properly.

How the work compounds

The initiative and the company are not an accessory to each other.

  1. 01

    BlaqTribe builds technology

Real systems, for real clients, to a standard that holds up anywhere.

  2. 02

    Sechaba develops capability

Young people learn to build, not to operate what others built.

  3. 03

    They build things

Products, businesses, solutions — theirs, not ours.

  4. 04

    The ecosystem grows

More people who can build means more that gets built.

  5. 05

    The country's capability deepens

Which is the only version of this that matters.

What this is not

It is not corporate social responsibility. It is not profit redirected to a good cause to be mentioned in a report.

It is not a recruitment pipeline. If someone who came through Sechaba later joins the company, that is an outcome and not the design, and we will not pretend otherwise.

It is not charity, and the people it is for are not beneficiaries.

Where this is today

This is early. The initiative is being built, and we would rather say that plainly than describe a programme at a scale it has not reached.

If you run a school, a university department, a community programme or a company that wants to be part of it, we would like to hear from you.
